The recent effort in the senate to block the RESTORE act and then compromise with the President regarding terms to be included in the new proposal, including immunity grants for telecommunications companies involved in the questionable eavesdropping practices authorized by the President, are nothing short of despicable.
With Congress and the FCC refusing to investigate this matter, the government has left the investigation of these questionable practices to citizen advocacy groups and the courts. An immunity grant would halt these efforts, and effectively remove any recourse the American people have in determining whether these questionable practices were indeed illegal, and if so, holding the parties responsible.

John sat staring at the woman mouthing the morning news from his silent television. He shifted, his back stiff and complaining from a long night of sitting and staring. Two weeks of stubble grated against his fingers as he rubbed his cheeks and brought his hand down to stifle a yawn. He smiled. Covering his mouth as he yawned had never been very high on his list of things to worry about; it used to drive his mother crazy. His own son had changed all that. As soon as Shawn was old enough to start mimicking his and Tonya’s behavior, things like manners suddenly became important.

Here’s a riveting subject! Anyway, I’m taking a fiction writing class this semester, and this is the submission for our first, very simple and short assignment. The assignment was to write a scene describing a place. The place could not be a familiar place, but rather an invented place. There can be no characters. Here’s what I wrote.
