Coming Clean - short story

Nadine tied him off and slapped his forearm. “Nice big veins,” she said smiling, and stuck the needle in his arm.

Almost a minute went by, and then Layne suddenly breathed in deep and very slowly sank back into the couch. “Holy fuck,” he breathed, eyes closed.

“You’re welcome,” Nadine said. “My turn.”

Nadine went through the ritual again, methodically, and injected herself this time. She handed the needle to David and nuzzled up next to Layne.

Layne twitched, and Nadine laughed quietly. David set about cooking up his dose, and Layne twitched again, this time kicking the coffee table. David stopped and looked at Layne. Nadine gasped and smiled, and Layne started seizing. Nadine absently pushed Layne away.

David looked at the undissolved chunk of heroin in the spoon, and then back at Layne, hoping the convulsions would stop. They didn’t.

“Shit,” he spat, and got up and grabbed Layne’s shoulders. “Layne. Layne!” Layne didn’t respond, but just kept shaking. David took his cell phone out of his pocket, flipped it open, and then paused. He put the phone back in his pocket and picked up Layne’s cordless phone, and called 911. When he hung up, he gathered up the coke and the heroin, and half-carried, half-dragged Nadine out of Layne’s apartment.
