Coming Clean - short story

The day of the funeral, Daniel had gone home with David’s mother, just until he’d gotten things sorted out. The next weekend, David was back to his old standard, before rehab, before Jennifer. He did heroin in Layne’s living room with Nadine.

Nadine looked up at him, smiling as she saw where he was still staring.

“You ready to tie it off, baby?” she asked, sitting up and then kissing him playfully, sucking on his lower lip.

“Yeah, cook it up.”

Nadine was one of Layne’s sponges, as he called them. He had the money to attract them, and he kept them in whatever they wanted as long as they kept him in ass. Layne had since tired of Nadine, but her and David’s mutual habit had made the two of them friends, so Layne let her keep coming around. She’d started coming home with David, and David didn’t mind.

David watched her as she went through the ritual. She shook a bit of chunky, granulated brown powder into a spoon, mixed it with a little water and lemon juice from one of those plastic yellow lemons, and heated it over a lighter flame. The heat and lemon juice dissolved the heroin, and She pulled some of the liquid into a syringe, squirted a little out of the end and tapped the bubbles out.

“I want some,” Layne said suddenly.

Nadine smiled. “Well, well, well, Mr. I’m-too-good-to-tap-the-vein wants a little brown sugar. You sure about that?”

“I bought it,” Layne said.

“Yes you did. Here, you can have mine. You wanna do it?”

Layne thought for a second, and then said, “No, you do it.”
