Coming Clean - short story

“I miss him too. It’ll just be a little while longer, ma.”

“You know, I’m not stupid, David. Are you using again?”

“Jesus, ma!” David hissed, sounding offended. “No. I told you, I’m just trying to find a job and get back on my feet.”

“Jennifer was so good for you, David. God I wish she was here.”

“I gotta go, ma.”

“David…”

David folded his cell phone and put it in his pocket. He walked back over to the couch and sat on the other side of Nadine, where she was leaning over the coffee table doing another line. Her shirt was pulled up a little in the back and the waist of her jeans was tented up. His eyes followed the lines of the tattoo on the small of her back down to where two curly tendrils met just above the crack of her ass. No panties.

David had met Layne a few months ago, before Jennifer’s accident, on a story he was working. Layne was a software genius. The story was your standard local-boymakes-good; Layne had developed some software designed for finding and tagging copyrighted audio and video files on the Internet. Google had bought it from him for high seven figures, and suddenly Layne was the richest 23 year old on the block. Layne was also an avid electronica fan, and he and David had hit it off when David had commented on Layne’s rare collection of Amon Tobin vinyl. They lived near each other, so they started hanging out on weekends, doing coke. He’d been with Layne the night
Jennifer died. Daniel had been sleeping on Layne’s bed.
