Denomination
I’ve been thinking a lot about the meaning of religion lately. What power it holds, and how that power is used by people to either better or worsen their lives, depending on their perspectives. Also, I’m interested in how people have historically subverted religion’s power for their own gains. I think we see this very brazenly being done today by political or militaristic leaders in many nations, especially the US, and I always marvel at how effective this tactic is, not just regarding its ability to call people to act, but also its ability to stifle rational thinking by those being called to action.
Here is a poem I wrote on this theme.
Denomination
Worship, all ye, and bow to thy god’s name,
Invok’d from mine own lips to salt thy wounds.
For god will do my will - our will’s the same;
To purge the scourge and send them to their tombs.
I will in pride speak humble, bare my breast,
Provoke through screed from scripture shrewdly cull’d.
My blasphemies wilt thou regard as bless’d,
And to my crimes wilt thy senses be lull’d.
But what of God, how doth he judge my soul?
Such judgment’s thin, vap’rous, unseen or ‘held.
My Hand subverts His honor’d, sacred scroll
So by His name, my power be compell’d.
If scrolls do speak contrary to my game,
Then from those rolls, God, I remove thy name.
